Special Report: Hurricane Florence
Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina, Sept. 14, as a Category 1 storm with significant flooding forecasted. Prior to the storm’s arrival, the Department of Defense proactively positioned forces across the full spectrum of DoD capabilities at every level – by air, by sea and by land – to respond as soon as a request is made

USFF Directs Norfolk Ships to Sortie, Installations Set TCCOR III
Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command ordered Sept 10 all Navy ships in the Hampton Roads area to set Sortie Condition Alpha; ships were completing final preparations and were to sortie, ahead of Hurricane Florence.
Sept. 11
Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Issues Evacuation for Personnel Residing in Virginia Zone A
Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic authorized an emergency evacuation order Sept. 11 for active-duty Navy and civilian personnel, dependents of active-duty service members and Reservists on active duty residing in Hampton Roads and Virginia Zone A. The order followed the governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s evacuation order for the same area and was to remain in effect until Sept. 16.
Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Issues Evacuation for Personnel Residing in 11 North Carolina Counties
Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic authorized an emergency evacuation order for active-duty Navy and civilian personnel, dependents of active-duty service members and Reservists on active-duty residing in North Carolina counties where mandatory evacuations were ordered.
Sept. 12
Navy Sets Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness Two in Hampton Roads
Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic ordered all Navy installations in the Hampton Roads area to set Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness Two (II) as Hurricane Florence was forecasted to bring high winds and rain to the Mid-Atlantic coast.
Navy Installations Prepare for Hurricane Florence
Installations from Navy Region Mid-Atlantic as well as Navy Region Southeast had been making final preparations for Hurricane Florence several days to protect the fleet, personnel and families.
